Chapter 4
Referral
One of the best ways to skip the 200-person queue and actually get an answer from a company is to get a referral. Let's talk about how.
Perfect scenario
In the perfect scenario, you have a friend who works at Google, and they just hand you a referral.
You call Google. Google calls you. Your friend tells you what to expect. Happy life.
So step one, always: check if you have friends in IT.
Plan B
You don't have friends... in IT, I mean.
Here's what you need to know about referrals: if the person you refer gets hired, the referrer usually gets paid — somewhere between 2-5k, depending on the role.
So next time you see an open role, don't just fire your CV into the email address listed there. Go to LinkedIn, find someone working in a similar role at that company, and say:
"Listen, here's the deal. This is my CV — I think I'm a strong candidate. You get a referral bonus, I get a shot at the job. Would you be open to passing this along?"
💡 Would you turn down free money for sending one message? Neither will they.
And you get to build releationship with your future mates as a bonus
